The City of Treasure Island committed to contributing over $8,000 this week. The Philip A. Bryant Melanoma Foundation hand-delivered a $6,000 check today! We raised over $20,000 to bring shade to our playground, most likely this year. Our kids can soon safely play at our Sunset Beach playground year-round, and maybe we can even prevent one or the other health problem caused by the sun. Thanks to all our sponsors!!

Update on the Shade-Our-Kids Project

Monday, August 31, 2015 @ 04:08 PM
posted by SBCATI Web Admin

Dear Members,

It is official. We are on the docket for September 3rd’s City Commission Meeting (6:00 p.m.). At the most recent meeting, Richard Harris gave a short presentation on where we are today with our project – including news that we’ve collected/assmbled over half the amount of money we believe to be needed to fund our project. Therefore, this action sets in motion a review of our request (by City staff), of which will either be a recommendation for or against (that the city fund 50%) our project and our commissioners will vote on it.

I believe this to be a win/win situation for the City and us. However, what I think doesn’t matter. What matters is what you – our membership – think(s). I encourage you to e-mail and/or write our mayor and commissioners  and let them know what you think and ask them to support the project! I also encourage you to come to the meeting on September 3rd as a show of support (and wear one of your Sunset Beach t-shirts).

Please note that the September 3rd meeting will also be the first of two (2) required public hearings/workshops on our city’s upcoming budget. Thus, our project request is timely in that it is coming before the city and the public at just the right time.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Steve Yost

Shade-Our-Kids Project Update

Sunday, August 9, 2015 @ 08:08 AM
posted by SBCATI Web Admin

Dear Members:

It has been over four months since we first announced and began accepting contributions to fund our Shade-Our-Kids Project.   Hence, we thought it appropriate to update everyone on where we are with this project. The good news is that we have collected over $12,000 (Note: this amount includes a $6,000 donation from Philip A. Bryant Melanoma Foundation).

This month, we will be presenting to the City of Treasure Island a formal request asking the City to fund 50% of the project cost (Note: total cost of the project is estimated to be $22,500).   Basically, we are convinced that the Shade-Our-Kids Project is such a viable project and that in order to more quickly move this project forward, we feel it necessary to now approach the city for their support – with money in hand.

The next meeting of the City Commissioner’s is Tuesday, August 18 (at 6:00) at City Hall. Please, if you can, plan on attending this meeting. By doing so, you will be helping us show the City our unified support. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Steve Yost

Help build Sunset Beach Sand Dunes June 27th

Monday, June 22, 2015 @ 04:06 PM

A section of Treasure Island beachfront in Sunset Beach is scheduled for a sea oats planting on Saturday, June 27, 2015, says Treasure Island Public Works Director Mike Helfrich. The area set for planting is from 80th Avenue northward 1500 feet to approximately the Sunset Chateau.

“We’ve got approximately 5000 of the small sea oats seedlings to plant,” said Helfrich.

The number of plants sounds like a lot, but surprisingly, the planting goes fast. Helfrich explains why, in a couple of hours, a large tract of sea oats can be planted. “We lay out the plants ahead of time in the places where we intend to create or repair sand dunes. All our volunteers have to do is take a sturdy metal pole, make a little hole in the sand and drop the plant in. That’s it.

He asks volunteers to bring their own gloves, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. Drinking water and planting tools will be provided.

Helfrich said people generally work in pairs, one on “hole” duty, the other making sure the plant is secure in the sand. “It’s not back-breaking work,” he assures. “It’s really very social, too. Plus, you get to help build new sand dunes.”

It is a perfect Saturday morning activity for civic associations, church groups, environmental organizations or just a bunch of friends looking to do some green work.

Sea oats help stabilize sand and create dunes. The dunes reduce coastal erosion and protect the homes and businesses behind the dune area. Pinellas County Coastal Management provides the free sea oat seedlings.
