Update on the Shade-Our-Kids Project

Monday, August 31, 2015 @ 04:08 PM
posted by SBCATI Web Admin

Dear Members,

It is official. We are on the docket for September 3rd’s City Commission Meeting (6:00 p.m.). At the most recent meeting, Richard Harris gave a short presentation on where we are today with our project – including news that we’ve collected/assmbled over half the amount of money we believe to be needed to fund our project. Therefore, this action sets in motion a review of our request (by City staff), of which will either be a recommendation for or against (that the city fund 50%) our project and our commissioners will vote on it.

I believe this to be a win/win situation for the City and us. However, what I think doesn’t matter. What matters is what you – our membership – think(s). I encourage you to e-mail and/or write our mayor and commissioners  and let them know what you think and ask them to support the project! I also encourage you to come to the meeting on September 3rd as a show of support (and wear one of your Sunset Beach t-shirts).

Please note that the September 3rd meeting will also be the first of two (2) required public hearings/workshops on our city’s upcoming budget. Thus, our project request is timely in that it is coming before the city and the public at just the right time.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Steve Yost
President

Shade-Our-Kids Project Update

posted by SBCATI Web Admin

Dear Members:

It has been over four months since we first announced and began accepting contributions to fund our Shade-Our-Kids Project.   Hence, we thought it appropriate to update everyone on where we are with this project. The good news is that we have collected over $12,000 (Note: this amount includes a $6,000 donation from Philip A. Bryant Melanoma Foundation).

This month, we will be presenting to the City of Treasure Island a formal request asking the City to fund 50% of the project cost (Note: total cost of the project is estimated to be $22,500).   Basically, we are convinced that the Shade-Our-Kids Project is such a viable project and that in order to more quickly move this project forward, we feel it necessary to now approach the city for their support – with money in hand.

The next meeting of the City Commissioner’s is Tuesday, August 18 (at 6:00) at City Hall. Please, if you can, plan on attending this meeting. By doing so, you will be helping us show the City our unified support. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Steve Yost

Beach Bonfire

It is hard to tell when it is winter in Florida. But there is nothing like good old fashion beach bonfire to remind us how lucky we are. This will be the 4th annual official Sunset Beach Holiday Bonfire, and the first that we can sell beer and wine. So come on down and share the cheer with all of us this Friday (12/5) at the pavilion. Thank you Cory, from Paradise Spa for helping with the wood. If anybody wants to help dig the hole, set up tables, lights, or just get the weekend off to an early start, we will begin at noon. The fire will be lit just before sunset. Treasure Island Fire Dept. will assist extinguishing at 11. Hot dogs, s’mores, beer, wine, soda, water will all be available, so just bring a chair, and an appetite for fun.

President’s Message

Happy Autumnal Equinox Sunset Beach. Now that autumn is here we can look forward to one of the best seasons in one of the best parts of the country. Fall in Treasure Island means cooler days but with water temps remaining in the 80’s. It also is the time of year that the Civic Association begins events for the next year.

As the new president let me first thank all members of the association and the board for participating in a process that helps make Sunset Beach the unique community that it is. We really do have something special here.

Dates for events is the first order of business, and as you can see, not much has changed. I encourage all members to attend as many events as possible, but the Welcome Back Potluck is very important for several reasons. Renewing membership, new membership, networking, presenting new ideas- are most effectively achieved at the earliest opportunities.

We will have a new order of t-shirts and hoodies available. If you had trouble getting the size or color in the past, this is your chance to get the item of your choice. We will also have a new item, beverage coozies. They may sell out fast, so get yours now.

Another item I feel strongly about is Beach Clean-up. As you can see Steve Yost is spear-heading a dedicated campaign to maintain our recently re-nourished beach. I will be working with him to increase participation and awareness.

We also have a new event- The Floatilla. This summer’s inaugural soiree went “swimmingly” well. Thanks to all floaters (and non-floaters who showed up at the dock stops) who made the event a success. Special thanks to Dawn Fader / Patrick Fitzgerald and Rick Russ (a.k.a. Shaggy) for hosting the festive dock stops.

In closing I want to stress the importance of membership. Please encourage neighbors, friends and family to join / rejoin the association. Our events are getting more popular every year, we want to insure the residents of Sunset Beach reap the benefits of our special community spirit.

Hello Sunset Beach Neighbors,  It is that time of year again. We will be holding our Annual Beach BBQ at The Lion Club on Friday April 4th. Smokin J’s will once again be serving up their famous smoked pulled pork and BBQ chicken. Our music for the evening will be Sunset Beach’s own, Charlie Morris. We will be selling 150 tickets, so get them while you can. Call Dawn for your ticket request,727-687-2522. This should be a fun night of good food, good music, and great neighbors. This is our second to last event as our Associations year is coming to a close. The last event will be our Pot Luck on May 5th.  As this year wraps up I would like to say it was a pleasure serving as your President this past year. We had a lot of fun putting together all the events this past year. From the Bonfire to the Holiday Stroll to the Luminaries, to the Rockin Italian Night, the Island Wide Garage Sale; We had a blast. A special thanks to all the board members who make all this possible, without them, we would be lost. This is a volunteer job and my hat goes off off to each one of them. Thank you board members.
We are all so lucky to call this little island home. We live in a great place, just stop telling people. We want to keep it our secret.
Thanks,  Patrick Fitzgerald
