We did it! The “Shade our Kids” Fundraiser is completed!

posted by SBCATI Web Admin

The City of Treasure Island committed to contributing over $8,000 this week. The Philip A. Bryant Melanoma Foundation hand-delivered a $6,000 check today! We raised over $20,000 to bring shade to our playground, most likely this year. Our kids can soon safely play at our Sunset Beach playground year-round, and maybe we can even prevent one or the other health problem caused by the sun. Thanks to all our sponsors!!

Shade-Our-Kids Project Update

Sunday, August 9, 2015 @ 08:08 AM
posted by SBCATI Web Admin

Dear Members:

It has been over four months since we first announced and began accepting contributions to fund our Shade-Our-Kids Project.   Hence, we thought it appropriate to update everyone on where we are with this project. The good news is that we have collected over $12,000 (Note: this amount includes a $6,000 donation from Philip A. Bryant Melanoma Foundation).

This month, we will be presenting to the City of Treasure Island a formal request asking the City to fund 50% of the project cost (Note: total cost of the project is estimated to be $22,500).   Basically, we are convinced that the Shade-Our-Kids Project is such a viable project and that in order to more quickly move this project forward, we feel it necessary to now approach the city for their support – with money in hand.

The next meeting of the City Commissioner’s is Tuesday, August 18 (at 6:00) at City Hall. Please, if you can, plan on attending this meeting. By doing so, you will be helping us show the City our unified support. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Steve Yost
President, Sunset Beach Civic Association

Shade our Kids!

Monday, February 9, 2015 @ 12:02 PM
posted by SBCATI Web Admin

By now most of you have heard about our project called “Shade our Kids!” and many started wondering what a shade solution for our playground could look like. The image below is what we currently envision. However, what we can afford will have the final say in how esthetically integrative the final design will be. Luckily, what you see is a favorable solution and also on the lower end of the budget. The cost for shade is in the poles. The structure will have to withstand highest wind speeds, thus the poles have to be massive and go deep into the ground. A project like this gets quoted between $20K and $45K.  The city of T.I. will not finance such a project on its own but will most certainly contribute if we manage the project and provide part of the funds. We are in touch with the Philip A. Bryant Melanoma Foundation which supports shade for playground projects in the Tampa Bay area via fundraising. We are raising funds ourselves, too. $3 of all ticket sales for this year’s Italian Night will go towards funding and we seek your voluntary contributions as outlined in the following PDF: Fundraise Sheet.

The City Commission is expected to approve new parking regulations next week that could reduce the number of parking spaces controlled by Caddy’s on the Beach, according to this St. Petersburg Times story.

The city has been working for four years to update its parking regulations citywide. The new rules prohibit commercial parking in residential zones.
