Help build Sunset Beach Sand Dunes June 27th
A section of Treasure Island beachfront in Sunset Beach is scheduled for a sea oats planting on Saturday, June 27, 2015, says Treasure Island Public Works Director Mike Helfrich. The area set for planting is from 80th Avenue northward 1500 feet to approximately the Sunset Chateau.
“We’ve got approximately 5000 of the small sea oats seedlings to plant,” said Helfrich.
The number of plants sounds like a lot, but surprisingly, the planting goes fast. Helfrich explains why, in a couple of hours, a large tract of sea oats can be planted. “We lay out the plants ahead of time in the places where we intend to create or repair sand dunes. All our volunteers have to do is take a sturdy metal pole, make a little hole in the sand and drop the plant in. That’s it.
He asks volunteers to bring their own gloves, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. Drinking water and planting tools will be provided.
Helfrich said people generally work in pairs, one on “hole” duty, the other making sure the plant is secure in the sand. “It’s not back-breaking work,” he assures. “It’s really very social, too. Plus, you get to help build new sand dunes.”
It is a perfect Saturday morning activity for civic associations, church groups, environmental organizations or just a bunch of friends looking to do some green work.
Sea oats help stabilize sand and create dunes. The dunes reduce coastal erosion and protect the homes and businesses behind the dune area. Pinellas County Coastal Management provides the free sea oat seedlings.

“SHADE OUR KIDS” INFO EVENT APRIL 14
The Beach Clean-up Committee is happy to report that a successful beach clean-up effort was held Saturday, November 8th. Approximately a dozen people showed up to canvas the beach (and dunes) for various items deemed unacceptable. Ms. Gene Embler headed up this effort in my absence and I understand she provided coffee and bagels. Thank you, Gene!!!!!
It was reported that our effort did, again, encounter a large number of cigarette butts. In anticipation of such, many of us who participate in our group clean-efforts come to the beach equipped with a kitty-litter scooper attached to a light weight broom handle (to make it easier to pick up those pesky butts). To those interested, plastic kitty-litter scoopers are available at the Dollar Store for….drum roll…a dollar.
It was also reported that our clean-up crew encountered a surprising number of artificial flower petals. It seems that a wedding was held at the pavilion and in lieu of using real petals, the wedding party used artificial ones. Unfortunately, the folks in charge of cleaning up after the wedding chose not to pick up the large number of petals that ended up in the dunes. A big thank you goes out to those of you who made it your mission to go into the dunes and retrieve those petals!
Our next beach clean up is scheduled for December 13th (9:00 – 12′ clock noon). The pavilion has been reserved and 20 parking passes (i.e. Free Parking) have been secured for those who choose to drive.

A new year of Sunset Beach Civic Association activities is upon us! To me, it’s like the beginning of football season. After a long off-season of no football, I am anxiously anticipating football in the fall. So, likewise, I am anxiously anticipating meeting many of you on the morning of every Second Saturday of each month to do our beach clean up.
So, what’s new about beach clean up? Well, except for the obvious (there’s more beach to clean up), not much. We will still meet the second Saturday of every month and go out and clean up our beach and dunes. For most of these second Saturday’s, you’ll meet up with my wife, Debbie, and me. Debbie will be set up at the pavilion with the radio playing and with buckets, bags and pick-up tools readily available for you to use to help you do your part of our clean up effort. As for me, I’ll be out picking up trash. Most times we’ll be there from 9 – 12 o’clock noon. We will have bottled water for everyone and sometimes, a cold adult beverage will available for your consumption.
This season, we will continue to monitor our No-Butts-Left-Behind Zone campaign. Last month, after collecting all the trash, I went through it, found and counted 840 cigarette butts. Eight-hundred-and-forty! That’s just way too many butts left behind by our neighbors and guests. Recently, our partner, Keep Pinellas Green, announced a new, recycle your cigarette butts campaign. Basically this campaign provides special cigarette butt repositories. We will be looking into this campaign and possibly obtaining some butt repositories (to see if they make a difference).
In closing, I hope to see you on one of our Second Saturdays. In the meantime, thank you for your support and to all of you who routinely pick up trash on your daily walks on the beach. Every little bit helps!
